Tambopata rainforest

The Tambopata National Reserve and adjacent Bahuaja-Sonene National Park in the Peruvian Amazon contain one of the most pristine and diverse rainforests on earth. Created in 1990 to protect the watersheds of the Tambopata and Candamo Rivers, this area became a natural protected corridor when joined with Madidi National Park in Bolivia. Currently, these three contiguous Amazon Reserves comprise the largest protected zone of tropical rainforest in the world, covering a total of 3.5 million hectares; this is an area two-thirds the size of Costa Rica and nearly the size of Switzerland.

Program summary

Day 1: USA – Lima

A Local Guide / Tour Leader will welcome you at the airport and escort you to the hotel. The hotel is located inside the airport area

Day 2: Lima – Puerto Maldonado – Sandoval Lake Lodge

After an early breakfast, the entire group will gather at the Hotel then proceed to the airport for our flight to Puerto Maldonado.
Upon arrival to Puerto Maldonado you will be taken to our headquarters for re-packing, then continue to Sandoval Lake Lodge. At the lodge we will explore the grounds and lake surroundings. Overnight at SLL.

Day 3: Sandoval Lake Lodge

This is considered one of the most beautiful oxbow lakes in this region. We will spend some time in the morning and afternoon exploring the surroundings of the Lake from a comfortable catamaran. Monkeys and Giant River Otters are two of the main attractions. A night visit to the lake is a must. Overnight at SLL.

Day 4: Sandoval Lake Lodge – Puerto Maldonado

Early mornings are great to observe dozens of macaws and parrots visiting the Moriche palm patches. Before heading back to Puerto Maldonado we will spend some time on the lake and trails, looking and enjoying this incredible morning ritual.
The afternoon will be at your leisure with time to explore Puerto Maldonado town. Overnight in a Puerto Maldonado Hotel. This stop allows you the opportunity to spend time at a jungle city, and see, feel and experience the local culture.

Day 5: Puerto Maldonado – Refugio Amazonas

In the morning you take a 10 minute ride from the hotel to our Puerto Maldonado headquarters. While enjoying the taste of the forest in our gardens you will be asked to pack only the necessary gear for your next few days, leaving the rest at our safe deposit. This helps us keep the boats and cargo light.
The two and a half hour boat ride from the Tambopata Port to our Refugio Amazonas destination will take us past the Community of Infierno and the Tambopata National Reserve´s checkpoint, then into the buffer zone of this 1.3 million hectare conservation unit. Lots of birds, river turtles and even Capybaras can be spotted from the boat. Night activity: Caiman search. Overnight at RA.

Day 6: Refugio Amazonas

We will visit the 25 meters scaffolding tower to enjoy the canopy. From here views of mixed species canopy flocks as well as toucans, macaws and raptors are likely. We will learn about the Brazil nut economy by visiting a natural patch of Brazil nut forest. A visit to a local farm will also be one of our activities while at this lodge, to learn about medicinal plants and local fruits. Overnight at RA.

Día 7: Traslado Bote Privado – de Refugio Amazonas al Tambopata Research Center (TRC)

In the early morning we have the option of revisiting the tower, walking the trail system or visiting another small oxbow lake before we prepare ourselves for our next adventure.
Four and half hours by boat from Refugio Amazonas, in the pristine heart of the reserve, lies the Tambopata Research Center. One and a half hours into our boat journey, as we cross the confluence with the Malinowski River, leaving the final traces of human habitation behind. Within the 700,000 hectare uninhabited nucleus of the reserve, sightings of capybara, caiman, geese, macaws and other large species will become more frequent. Upon arrival and after orientation, we will visit the overlook trail for a magnificent view of the foothills of the Andes and the wide pristine forest that surrounds this incredible Reserve. Overnight at TRC.

Day 8: Tambopata Research Center

Day activities include: a visit to the Macaw clay lick, pond platform, and floodplain trail. This will be followed by a night walk. Overnight at TRC.

Day 9: Tambopata Research Center

Day activities include: the Macaw clay lick, terra firma forest trail, palm swamp trail, and lectures about the Macaw project. Overnight at TRC.

Day 10: Tambopata Research Center – Puerto Maldonado – Lima

We retrace our river and road journey back to Puerto Maldonado, our office and the airport. Depending on airline schedules this may require dawn departures.

Upon arrival in Lima we will take you to your hotel. The finale will be a Farewell Dinner at a local restaurant to taste Peruvian cuisine, considered one of the best in the world.

Day 11: Lima – USA or other Destination within the country

Cost

Approximately: $2,050 per person.
Estimated Program cost is based on double occupancy and an assumption as to the number of persons in the group. Cost will vary as deviations from this occur.

Included

All meals, accommodation, and services; all river transportation; transfers from and to the airports of Puerto Maldonado and Lima. Two overnight at the Lima hotel and the Farewell Dinner.
Also included are English speaking, local guides for all excursions.

Not Included

International or domestic airfares, airport departure taxes or visa fees, excess baggage charges, additional nights during the trip due to flight cancellations, alcoholic beverages or bottled water, snacks, insurance of any kind, laundry, phone calls or messages, reconfirmation of flights, items of personal nature, gratuities.
